Following a 2-1 win over league rivals Nottingham Forest Women FC, Burnley FC Women have made history by securing a spot in the fourth round of the Women’s FA Cup, after coming back from a goal down to win with goals from Sarah Agger and Nicola Worthington.
It is the furthest the Claret Women have ever progressed in the competition, and they will now host Leicester City Women of the women’s Championship in the tie, on Sunday 26th January.
The Foxes currently lie ninth in the Championship but should prove a stern test for a Burnley side who are presently fourth in the Northern Premier Division, one league below the Leicestershire side.
Nicola said: “The Forest tie will certainly go down as one of the games to remember from this season. We conceded a sloppy goal to go behind, however we never gave up and made a few tactical and personnel changes to really go at Forest in the last 20 minutes.
“It wasn’t a particularly great game of football, it was a battle. For our equaliser, I remember Lizzy setting the ball back to Sarah and she lifted her head and struck the ball well, floating it over the keeper from an almost impossible angle.
“The game swung in our favour in that moment and I felt we could pinch it before the 90 minutes. I got a free kick from a tight angle again and just thought to myself ‘hit this low and hard across the six-yard box and it could go anywhere. I got a bit of luck and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
“We defended well for the last five minutes and the saw the game out to run our 2-1 winners on the day in what was a massive result for us.”
Nicola added: “Leicester is a really exciting draw. To get a side from the Championship is what we all wanted, as it’s a chance to prove ourselves against bigger opposition and show just what a good side we are. I’m very excited!”
Kick-off is 1pm on Sunday 26th January and the game will take place at Padiham FC’s Ruby Civil Arena, 16 Well Street, Padiham, Burnley, BB12 8LE. Entrance is £3 for adults and £1 for under 16s.
